Rolex Calatrava
Rolex Oyster Perpetual “Calatrava” 18k Gold ref. 6090 circa 1953
Description
For about half the price of some of the most aesthetic vintage Patek Phillipe Calatravas, and a little more than a vintage Datejust, this 18k gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual from the 1950’s stands out for its value, elegance, and its classical dress watch case size at 34mm. Beyond the value proposition, the details of this piece make it very special: bombé twisted lugs, pencil stick hour markers and dauphine hands, a red text line for the word “officially”, a dial with beautiful patina that shows itself in different lighting, and an 18k gold case with both “Registered Design” and “Modele Depose” stamped on the caseback indicating this piece was likely sold in the European market.
Condition & Scope
Watch is in worn condition, not uncommon for a roughly 70 year old timepiece. Scratches present on the crystal, and scratches and dings present on the case. Has been keeping great time, no irregularities noticed. The case has likely been polished at some point in its life. The gold bezel, along with the leather strap, are aftermarket replacements which is reflected in the price. For reference, comps on past sold and currently on the market references the same or similar to this piece average around $7.5k. Comes as watch only.
